Which colors do dogs see best?

Retinal studies demonstrate that dogs lack the receptors necessary to detect red light, giving them vision like human red-green color blindness. In tests, dogs often fail to distinguish between red, green, and yellow objects, indicating they see these as similar, muted, brownish tones. Studies using specialized, modified color vision tests (like human Ishihara tests) directly confirm this reduced color perception. Due to this, a red toy on green grass likely appears as a brownish object on a yellow-brown background.

If you’re wondering which colors you should order for your pets cot bed, keep in mind that dogs see fewer colors than humans. They see blue & yellow the best. Red, green, and orange appear as shades of brown, gray, or dull yellow to them. They may see green, yellow, and orange as yellowish, and violet and blue as blue. Red is more difficult for dogs to see.
